How it works
db(x) — a bare, SciPy/general-DSP-flavored alias for mag2db(x) above: 20*log10(x), the AMPLITUDE/field-quantity convention (voltage, current, pressure, ...). mag2db/ db2mag stay the canonical names (see their own doc comment for why a single unqualified db() was deliberately left out originally) — this is only here because callers coming from SciPy/plain-DSP habit reach for a bare db() first, and it is clearer to answer that expectation explicitly, spelling out which convention it picked, than to leave it erroring.
From the note above this builtin in the interpreter, where the reasoning was written down as it was built.
