Bridge health monitoring

bridge structural health monitoring (SHM) via distributed vibration sensors: synthetic-but-realistic simulation plus a real spectral-analysis damage-detection pipeline.

catalog/qu_bridge_shm.qu

WHAT IS SIMULATED (all synthetic, generated below -- not real bridge data, no hardware involved):

REAL SHM CONCEPT DEMONSTRATED:

Modal-frequency-shift damage detection -- comparing a structure's natural frequencies before/after a suspected damage event and flagging a shift beyond some threshold. This is a real, widely published vibration-based SHM technique (see e.g. Salawu, O.S., "Detection of structural damage through changes in frequency: a review", Engineering Structures, 1997), used here on synthetic data as an honest worked example of the analysis, not a claim about any real bridge.

ANALYSIS PIPELINE (all real, verified-working builtins -- see book/src/stdlib/signal-processing.md): periodogram(x, fs) -- per-sensor PSD, "before" vs "after" windows argmax / index math -- pick the modal peak within a known frequency band hilbert, find_peaks -- detect vehicle-crossing arrival envelopes xcorr -- cross-correlate windowed sensor pairs for TDOA

WHAT'S CHECKED: the detected before/after frequency shift on mode 1 must be a real, negative shift of roughly the injected -0.12 Hz (within 0.03 Hz), and must NOT trigger on the two unchanged modes; the matched-filter TDOA estimate for each sensor, each vehicle-crossing event, must land within 8 samples (40 ms at fs=200 Hz, under 2.5% of the largest true delay) of the true geometric delay (xs[i]-xs[0])/v_vehicle.

# Cross-correlating raw sensor-vs-sensor waveforms (or even their
# envelopes) would let the strong, purely periodic modal content --
# present at EVERY sensor, undelayed, with no propagation lag -- dominate
# the correlation and lock onto a beat-frequency sidelobe instead of the
# true bump delay (measured directly: naive sensor-vs-sensor xcorr on this
# same data is off by 40-100+ ms). Instead this uses a matched filter: the
# amplitude envelope (|hilbert(y)|) suppresses the oscillatory carrier
# while preserving the bump's slow energy hump, and each sensor's envelope
# is cross-correlated against a clean Gaussian TEMPLATE of the known pulse
# shape (matched filtering is the standard, textbook way to pick a weak,
# known-shape arrival out of a noisy/interfered background -- radar,
# seismology, and acoustics all use exactly this). Since every sensor's
# delay is measured against the SAME template, the arbitrary template

The whole program

Runnable as it stands: qu run catalog/qu_bridge_shm.qu

# qu_bridge_shm.qu -- bridge structural health monitoring (SHM) via

# distributed vibration sensors: synthetic-but-realistic simulation plus a

# real spectral-analysis damage-detection pipeline.

#

# WHAT IS SIMULATED (all synthetic, generated below -- not real bridge

# data, no hardware involved):

# - A bridge deck of span L, instrumented with `n_sensors` accelerometers

# at known fixed positions `xs` along the span.

# - Global standing-wave vibration: 3 illustrative modal frequencies

# (2.1, 5.8, 11.3 Hz -- picked to be representative of a real short-to-

# medium-span highway bridge's first few bending modes, NOT a fit to

# any specific named structure) with simply-supported-beam mode shapes

# phi_n(x) = sin(n*pi*x/L). Every sensor sees the SAME 3 frequencies at

# the SAME time (a global mode has no propagation delay), but each

# sensor's amplitude is scaled by its own phi_n(x) -- the standard,

# defensible simplification for "mode shapes aren't uniform along a

# span."

# - A SEPARATE, physically distinct traveling phenomenon: a vehicle

# crossing the bridge at constant speed produces a local deflection

# bump that reaches sensor i at time t0 + xs[i]/v_vehicle. This is a

# genuine moving-load traveling disturbance (unlike the modes above,

# which do NOT propagate) -- it is explicitly NOT a claim about

# elastic/guided wave speed in the deck material, just an honest

# "something physically arrives at known times, at a known apparent

# speed" signal used purely to sanity-check sensor-to-sensor timing via

# cross-correlation (TDOA).

# - One injected damage event at t_anomaly: mode 1's natural frequency

# drops from 2.10 Hz to 1.98 Hz (-5.7%), simulating a localized

# stiffness loss. A drop in natural frequency is one of the best-known,

# most-published real SHM damage indicators (structural damage reduces

# local stiffness, which lowers the associated modal frequency) --

# this script demonstrates detecting exactly that indicator, not a

# fabricated one.

# - Independent per-sensor measurement noise (deterministic, seeded via

# `randn(..., seed=)` so the recording is exactly reproducible).

#

# REAL SHM CONCEPT DEMONSTRATED:

# Modal-frequency-shift damage detection -- comparing a structure's

# natural frequencies before/after a suspected damage event and flagging

# a shift beyond some threshold. This is a real, widely published

# vibration-based SHM technique (see e.g. Salawu, O.S., "Detection of

# structural damage through changes in frequency: a review", Engineering

# Structures, 1997), used here on synthetic data as an honest worked

# example of the analysis, not a claim about any real bridge.

#

# ANALYSIS PIPELINE (all real, verified-working builtins -- see

# book/src/stdlib/signal-processing.md):

# periodogram(x, fs) -- per-sensor PSD, "before" vs "after" windows

# argmax / index math -- pick the modal peak within a known frequency band

# hilbert, find_peaks -- detect vehicle-crossing arrival envelopes

# xcorr -- cross-correlate windowed sensor pairs for TDOA

#

# WHAT'S CHECKED: the detected before/after frequency shift on mode 1 must

# placement cancels out of the sensor-to-sensor difference.
